NECA GODZILLA 2003 | Figure Review

NECA'S Godzilla 1989 figure was not only a great figure but also a huge step up in quality compared to their other Godzilla figures. This quality is also found in the second figure that was revealed alongside the 1989 figure.

This figure is based on Godzilla's appearance in 2003's 'Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.' and is sculpted very nicely.

The head looks great, but while I was watching 'Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.', I couldn't help but feel like the head on the suit and the head on the figure aren't exactly a 1:1 match, but I feel like it's close enough. I think it actually resembles KiryuGoji's head from the IDW Comic Book series ('Godzilla in Hell', specifically) so all is forgiven.
I'm really surprised at the amount of detail inside the mouth and that the teeth look as good as they do.
Also, no mismatched eyes. Yay!

The rest of the body is sculpted beautifully. The skin texture feels rough and bumpy as it should. Being that this is a Milenium Godzilla, don't be surprised that some parts on the back are a bit more pokey than usual.  The charcoal grey skin with a greyish brown dry brushing fits well.

As for the main reason why this 'KiryuGoji' design was redubbed: 'SOSGoji', the scar on his chest from a previous encounter with Mechagodzilla. It looks alright, it definitely doesn't stand out as much which I'm pretty sure is intentional.

Also, the inner toes on the feet look funny.

While parts of this figures skin are pretty pokey, the larger Dorsal Fins which look like they would draw blood in an instant are thankfully made of a soft, rubbery material.
Well the Fins are sculpted well, I can't help but notice how the paint differs on the larger fins from the rest of them. This seems to be a common problem with some of the more recent NECA Godzilla's.

The figure has a perfectly sized tail that when stretched out, the tail is exactly 12 inches.

This 2003 Godzilla's articulation is as follows:

The Head can look up, can kinda look down and rotate. The mouth can open pretty wide.

The neck can rotate based on other reviews I've seen. Mine however is stuck!

Arms can rotate and move in/out at the shoulders, bend/rotate at the elbow. The hands can rotate and bend at the wrists. The fingers have a hinge joint that allows them to open and close.
The torso can rotate, move forward/backward and tilt side to side.
Legs rotate at the hips, which allows for some forward/backward movement and can move in and out. The knees can bend and rotate. The feet can rotate and pivot.

The tail is made of 8 sections with a long end piece with a bendy wire. While it's not as expressive as the SH MonsterArts tail, it can curve nicely and can completely flatten out.

No accessories.

Unfortunately, he's just a bit too tall to scale with Kiryu.

I really like how the sides of the box includes the alternate poster for 'Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.'

After making a solid home run with their 1989 figure, I'm happy to say they've done it yet again with their 2003 figure. Once again, I give it a high recommendation.

Unfortunately, this appears to be the last Godzilla figure we're getting from NECA that isn't a retool or repaint.
It really does make me sad that just as NECA was starting to really knock these Godzilla figures out of the park, they have to step down and let someone else (who's work has been average at best) be the primary supplier of Godzilla figures in the US.
There have been whispers that maybe NECA will gain the license back after the release/hype of Godzilla vs. Kong has passed, but it seems that only time will tell.
If this truly is the end, at least they went out on a high note.
